What’s the best value car in 2020?

When most car sites talk about the best value car in any year, they’re usually talking about the best ‘new’ car but, while that’s great if you can afford a new car, it doesn’t really help you if you’re looking for something really good but secondhand.

So what we thought we’d do is give you a couple of tips for great secondhand cars that are still both good value and in great condition in 2020.

We’ll start with the excellent 2014 Nissan Qashqai, which was WhatCar?’s car of the year in 2014:

This is a compact family SUV that isn’t really known for high speeds, so if you’re looking for a Ferrari disguised as a family car, this isn’t it. But it’s economical with a smooth and comfortable ride, thanks to good suspension, and a raised ride height that gives you a great view of the road.

There’s also plenty of space for running the kids about, going on holiday or doing a big family shop, with a 430l boot and fold down seats.

With an SUV, you might expect that it’s not easy to park but the Nissan Qashqai is actually not far off the same length and width as a standard hatchback, so fitting it into a parking space or a garage shouldn’t be a problem.

For sheer practicality it’s hard to beat, and with cheap running costs too, it’s a very good buy.

Next, we’re looking at the BMW 1 series:

In fact, pretty much everything we’ve said about the Nissan Qashqai can be applied to this great family car. It’s another car that looks bigger than it is with a good ride height, but again, it’s similar in size to a standard hatchback for easy parking.

It’s also a great drive with good suspension and excellent steering, so whether you’re stopping and starting in the city or letting it rip (within the speed limit, of course!) on the motorway, this is one to enjoy.

With a high quality, comfortable interior and intuitive controls that are clearly labelled, you should be up and running with this one in no time. An impressive 505l boot gives you plenty of space and an equally impressive safety record gives you peace of mind.

Both of these cars give you some great features and options with cheap running costs and you can get a great deal on either one – even better if you can find one that’s still only got mileage of around 50k!
