Car Buying: Men vs Women

When you’re buying a car, it’s one of the largest purchases you’ll ever make and of course you want a great deal on whichever car you choose, but did you know that when it comes to buying a car, men and women approach it very differently?

Unlike the usual stereotype, it’s not the case at all that women are more emotional and go for looks, brands and colour. In fact, women are much more focused on the practicalities, including ease of driving and parking, fuel economy, safety, price, servicing and insurance costs, comfort, storage space, and reliability. Women usually also take longer to make a buying decision than men do.

Men, on the other hand, do more often choose a car for emotional reasons, including focusing on prestige, the car’s branding and appeal, what their friends might think of it, and how much fun the car is to drive.

Men are also more confident about care buying and more comfortable discussing specifications in technical terms than women are, though that doesn’t mean women aren’t interested. It’s just that they prefer to hear the details in plain English rather than ‘tech speak’.

It is interesting, though, that millennials of both sexes are far more likely to feel equally confident about buying a car, and it’s now the case that there are more women on the road than men and that around 80% of decisions to buy a car are made by women, so things are definitely changing!
